Fort Myers Officer Killed by Gunfire

FORT MYERS | Authorities say a Fort Myers police officer was killed after responding to a downtown disturbance.

The shooting happened at 2:03 a.m. Friday.

Lee County Sheriff's Office spokesman Larry King said there was an exchange of gunfire during the disturbance. The officer and an armed suspect were fatally shot. Fort Myers police identified the slain officer as Andrew Widman, 30, who had been with the department since April 2007.

King said Widman was a former missionary. He was married and had three children.

It's unclear what prompted the disturbance call and if the suspect was alone. King said as many as five officers responded to the scene.

Several downtown streets were blocked off as detectives investigated. No further information was immediately available.
