Mathews Advances In U.S. Open Qualifying

Mathews earned one of six spots, advancing to the sectional on June 2.
David Suggs of Orlando was the medalist with a 66, and Sam Saunders of Orlando shot 67. Saunders is Arnold Palmer's grandson.
Mac Takahashi of Haines City carded a 73, missing by three shots. Kelly McHugh of Lakeland shot 78. David Saxon of Lakeland posted an 85.
League Taking Members
The Lakeland Men's Golf Association is accepting new members. The league, which travels to different courses each week, plays on Mondays. For information, call Ed Young at 863-648-9695.
Junior Programs, Camps
Golfers ages 6 to 18 can take part in the annual Junior Citrus Program at Cleveland Heights Golf Course.
The program begins on June 16 and continues on Mondays through July 14 with two age groups - peewees 6 to 11 and juniors 12 to 18.
Florida Southern women's golf coach Robbie Davis and George Jenkins girls' coach David Joyner will be the instructors.
The cost is $100 for both age groups. Call Cleveland Heights club pro Randy Sansing at 863-682-3277.
Northside Driving Range will hold junior clinics on Mondays and Thursdays, beginning on June 9.
Weekly classes are from 8:30 to 10 a.m. through July 31. The cost is $10 per class and includes refreshments.
Classes will cover all phases of the swing and short game with an emphasis on fundamentals.
The range is in North Lakeland on U.S. 98. To register, call 863-859-2095.
The Florida Southern Summer Golf Camp is June 8-12 at Lone Palm Golf Club for boys and girls ages 8 through high school.
The cost is $350 for commuter campers, and $550 for resident campers. Juniors will stay in Florida Southern dormitories with coach and player supervision, and eat at the college cafeteria. Transportation to Lone Palm is included.
