Broward, St. Petersburg Teams Fall Short at State Tournament

Broward Community College and St. Petersburg Community College were eliminated from the FCCAA/NJCAA state baseball tournament at Chain of Lakes Stadium on Sunday. In the loser's bracket, Miami Dade sent home St. Petersburg College, 16-4, with 15 hits.
Jaime Carmelo drove in three for Miami Dade. Nick Navarro and Karim Turkamani went deep as well.
Pensacola, after a loss late Saturday, eliminated Broward, 11-1, as Chris Sorce held Broward to one run on five hits over nine innings.
Ryan Ditthardt homered twice for Pensacola and Robert Beary also went deep.
Late Saturday, unseeded Manatee defeated Pensacola, the top team in the country, 13-9.
Manatee scored five runs in the top of the ninth in a game that featured seven errors, 33 hits and ended at 2:01 a.m.
Sunday's late game between undefeated Chipola and Manatee was not completed by press time.
Miami Dade will meet the loser of the Chipola-Manatee game today at 1 p.m. Chipola will face Pensacola at 4 p.m.
Alabama Rallies Past Florida: Matt Bentley's sacrifice fly scored Jeff Texada from second to lift Alabama over Florida, 8-7, in a comeback victory Sunday.
Alabama (30-22, 14-13 in Southeastern Conference) scored six runs in the final two innings. Florida (30-20, 14-13 SEC) scored single runs in each of the first three innings to take a 3-0 lead.
Alabama trailed 7-2 with two outs in the eighth inning, but scored five runs to tie the game and set up the ninth-inning Texada score.
Clint Franklin (3-3) took the loss. He allowed one run and one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Seminoles Crush Savannah State: Stuart Talpley followed a two-run homer in the first inning with a grand slam in the second as Florida State beat Savannah State, 24-4, on Sunday.
Jack Rye and Tommy Oravetz also homered for Florida State (43-8), who picked up their third straight dominating win over Savannah State. The Seminoles won 23-4 on Friday night and beat Savannah State (20-24) 19-2 on Saturday. Sunday's game was called after seven innings.
